The BacTerminator converts natural salt in the water to effective disinfectants by the use of electrical energy
NaCl ⇔ Na+ + Cl
No chemicals are needed to initiate the process. It “runs” solely on water and electrical power.
It works at extremely low conductivity >100 µS/cm and low salt concentration >10 mg Cl–/l.
In some systems where a high concentrate is neccesary NaCl (table salt) is added in the process.

By using electrolysis to make active chlorine (hypochlorous acid + hypochlorite), you will gain one of the most effective disinfection technologies available.
Microorganisms will be killed by: HOCl, Hypochlorous acid – the primary disinfectant in the disinfection process – is neutrally charged and is 50-100 times as effective as hypochlorite. Hypochlorous acid penetrates cell membranes and destroys the cells’ metabolism.
Compared with using chlorine added as chlorine gas or hypochlorite, the BacTerminator gains with 2-5 times better disinfection effect as if you added chlorine as a chemical.
Anode (+) oxidering (pH 2-5):
The natural chloride already dissolved in the water
is oxidised at the BacTerminator’s anodes to:
H2O –> ½O2 + 2H+ + 2e-
2Cl– –> Cl2 + 2e-
In water, chlorine gas will further react to give hypochlorous acid:
Cl2 + H2O –> HOCl + Cl– + H+
Hypochlorous acid is in equilibrium with hypochlorite (ions), depending on pH:
HOCl <–> OCl– + H+
Cathode (-) reduction (pH 9-12):
2H2O + 2e- –> H2 + 2OH–
The active chlorine equilibrium
After the electrochemical process, active hypochlorous acid is present in the water for residual disinfection, depending on dimensioning of the system.
NOTE: Most manufactures of water disinfection equipment only show log reductions baseret measure under laboratory conditions. Most of Adept’s data is live data measured on site in real processes.
You may well ask, why BacTerminator’s competitors only show laboratory data?
The BacTerminator® disinfection system gives a Log 2 to Log 7 reduction.
All tests were analysed and verified by an externally accredited laboratory (Eurofins).

BacTerminator has been tested on following microorganisms:
- Total Viable Counts (TVC) at 22°C
- Total Viable Counts (TVC) at 37°C
- Coliform bacteria
- E. coli
- Legionella (also specifically tested for Legionella pneumophila)
- Pseudomonas (also specifically tested for Pseudomonas aeruginosa)
